Under 500 - Short Film Review: SAUSAGE

With everything focused on Bond I thought that some short film reviews would add something extra to this blog, so why not begin with Robert Grieves' 'Sausage'. A family friendly, 6 minute action packed animated short that just seeps boundless fun and entertainment.

The narrative is centred around two local market vendors who attempt to fight off the growing force of the highly competitive trader who has set up in their area to sell the same products they do. This symbolises the on-going battle between fast food vendors who threaten the existence of local stores. Despite the metaphor in place Sausage radiates a terrific amount of energy and takes us into the comical World that is Grieves' mind, as we witness the ongoing battle of the three suppliers escalate dramatically. Keeping us entertained and intrigued to see how inventive they can be to win over the customers. We are also informed about the message that comes across to the audience which is clearly a problem that all local store vendors face all over the UK.

Something as creative as Sausage really shows the potential that many Short Filmmakers have and is just one example of how creative one can be when given the freedom and liberation they need to create whatever they want. Grieves said on Short of the week.com he felt "Disheartened" by the commercial look of some of his previous work, so he decided to create a visual style that would suit him and create a fun filled animation with a storyline filled with boundless fun; 'Sausage' being the result of this.

After being screened at multiple festivals around the World and winning awards for 'Best Animation' and 'Best Short' in 2013 and 2014, it is still being viewed two years after its release at Manchester's new Film Festival. This shows how much of an impact it has had on people and is still entertaining many people two years on! But what else? Robert Grieves today has moved on and teases of his new works with illustrations on his twitter account that are just as eye catching and exciting than some of the stills and images we see in Sausage. Grieves has more to offer in the coming years but will always be remembered for producing this short masterpiece.
