Independence day: Resurgence Trailer review

In 1996 both my birth and Independence Day happened! This film set the bar for a new kind of Hollywood Blockbuster with the best CGI at the time and terrific action sequences. It also became the first film to gross over $500 million internationally and became the highest grossing film for that year! No doubt a great film and seen as I missed the first film (just!) I am just as excited to be around for the sequel!

The trailer spends most of the time showing old and new faces with Bill Pullman and Jeff Goldblum returning to their respected roles as President Whitmore and David Levinson, but more surprisingly Judd Hirsch coming back as Julius Levinson as he pops up in this trailer on a boat overshadowed by the alien spacecraft (at least I think it is), and also the return of Vivica A.Fox as Jasmin Dubrow-Hiller. One face that is sure to get people excited is Liam Hemsworth playing the part of Jake Morrison who is seen a few times and quite a fine actor as well, but a new face is placed on an old character with Maika Monroe playing the part of Patricia Whitmore. Although no Will Smith? Well as you might have seen at the end of the trailer there is a website where it takes you through the timeline from the war of 1996. One of the highlights is the death of Colonel Hiller, (Will Smith's character at the time was Captain Hiller) was killed when some alien tech malfunctioned, so unfortunately we probably won't be seeing his character in the series again. however his Son will be in it played by Jessie Usher.

The trailer also spends a lot of time telling us about what mankind have been doing over the passed twenty years since the war, manipulating alien technology so they can prepare for another invasion. This being a huge jump and quite exciting as it takes itself further away from the reality of today and opens up a wider range of events that could potentially happen. With the humans supposedly catching up on technology, the aliens could well have developed their technology further again putting the humans in a bad position once again.

So what about the story? Considering this is the first trailer I don't think they'll give much a way and is more of a teaser of what we can expect. But to be honest what else is there to explain? Humans are fine, prepared, but the aliens are back! We pretty much know that part of the story but it leaves room for more development.

Newcomers like Liam Hemsworth's and Jessie Usher's characters will have to fill the boots of previous cast members, with Liam's character being a fighter pilot who has made mistakes and has been demoted to driving a dune buggy on the moon could make for an interesting placement for the character. Then Jessie's character living in the shadow of his father, Colonel Hiller could come out and prove that he's just as strong and WILLing! - Get it? Will Smith ;D

Anyway it's shaping up to be a pretty decent movie and a worthy sequel. One gripe from the original would be the script, at times it was poor and the stereotypical use of the British! Who says "Belgium Contingence on the Cyanide" in Britain any more?! What does it even mean?!

Hopefully this one won't be as patronising!

Thanks for reading! :)
